WestwoodWinds is a community concert band that performs a range of musical styles that reflect our shared American culture. Participation is voluntary and free to all residents of Westwood and surrounding communities.
The ensemble meets during the summer when it prepares and performs music for three concerts. Through these performances, its audiences celebrate the skills and talents of our very own neighbors and friends.
WestwoodWinds Community Band, Inc. is a 501(c) (3) non-profit corporation.
WestwoodWinds is made up of amateur musicians who share a common interest in music. Almost all of them performed in band while they were students in high school or college. The skills and passion for performing were begun and nurtured during the earlier days of their lives and have been rekindled by the opportunity to participate in WestwoodWinds.
Most members are or were Westwood residents, Their ages range from mid teens through retirement, including current WHS students, college students, recent college graduates just entering their respective professions, working adults and retirees.
James Giurleo retired as the K-12 Director of Performing Arts for the Westwood Public Schools in 2009. During his tenure, he has formed and directed numerous performing groups and was awarded the Lowell Mason Award for dedicated and distinguished service to music education in Massachusetts. Mr. Giurleo, a Westwood resident, is the founder of the Prodigy Program, Westwood’s after school music lesson program.
His life-long involvement in music education prompted him to provide opportunities for people to pursue their interest in learning and performing music in the community through the creation of WestwoodWinds.
